Here is a shot of our off-site stick built home making its way down the assembly line. The benefits of this process are the controlled environment the home is built in as well as the benefits in production time and quality derived from having the same people performing the same task over and over. Just like Henry Ford taught us. Production time on average is 1 week from start to finish. This means quality and value to you.

You may remember our recent post “free for the taking” where we were looking for someone to rescue a perfectly livable double-wide mobile home and avoid filling up the landfill even more. Well, we were successful, and now we are ready to build a new home for our client. After some discussion about size and style of home she wanted, it was decided to build what I refer to as off-site stick built construction. Some might say “isn’t that just fancy new terminology for modular construction?”
It is, and it isn’t. I’ll explain, yes the home is built in sections and is modular. However, I refer to modular homes as being built by companies who also build mobile homes and off-site stick built homes are built by companies who build nothing else. They use local tradesman who come into the plant and build the house much the same way it would be done on-site. Of course it is built in sections so it can be driven to the site but don’t think this in anyway limits the size or style of home that can be built. The possibilities are endless.
For this project, we chose a fairly simple ranch style home which made the decision to use off-site stick built construction an even better one.  Stay tuned for more posts on this project and more info on off-site stick built construction.

Bill Bell

Check out our most recent Universal Design project. This beverage station is fully accessible by everyone. Notice how we brought the wall cabinets down on top of the counter for easy reach. We also made sure the sink drain was in the rear of the sink instead of centered. This helps keep plumbing out of the way. For help making your project more Universal, give us a call.

My wife and I were recently at Springfest  in Ocean city, Maryland, very near our home in Lewes, Delaware. While speaking with one of the vendors, we learned that they are a retired couple who do craft fairs all over the country. Fairly common, I guess. When we asked where their home base was, they replied they live in their RV full time. I was intrigued by that and thought this might be a very cool way to retire.
We have tossed the idea around and the more I think about it, the more interested I become. Seems I’m not the only one. In fact, it looks like this may be a trend.  While reading one of the many newsletters I receive on the subject of Aging in Place, I read about this idea of mobile retiring. Apparently, some folks want to Age in Place, all over the place.

If you would like to remain independent, safe, and comfortable in your own home for as long as possible, contact us to show you how.

It was refreshing to see this article in Delaware Health + Wellness, a special supplement to Delaware Today magazine. As Delaware’s first Certified Aging in Place Specialist, I have been talking about this topic for a long time. My wife Kathy is a Seniors Real Estate Specialist. For nearly a decade we have been helping Delawarean’s meet their housing needs, whether they are looking for a new residence or want to Age in Place in their current home.

We live and work from Lewes, Delaware. However, we frequently travel all over the state. We have been speaking about the growing importance of preparing for our future housing needs at AARP events, APA seminars, and where ever we can find an audience. It’s nice to see the subject getting some local press. Read the article here

There is a lot of design that goes into Universal Design. It's one thing to throw around terminology like "zero threshold entrance" or "curbless shower". It's easy to explain why lever style door handles are easier to use than traditional door knobs. It takes a whole lot more training and experience to create universally designed spaces that really work. A large part of that design is knowing about the various building materials, specialty hardware, and specifically designed fixtures necessary to make the design function. One of the places I search for hard to find items is dynamic-living.com . Now, after researching and locating the appropriate materials and fixtures, it is imperative that everything be built and installed properly and per the design. Let's face it, there are thousands of contractors who can install a new bathroom. However, I don't know anyone else in my area that knows the first thing about Universal Design
So if you are serious about living independently in your own home for as long as possible, please call a professional who can help you do it right.

This well kept, 3 bedroom, 2 bath home in Bethany Beach, Delaware has served it's owners well over the years and it still has a lot of life in it. However, we need to move it to make way for a new home. It is in good condition and would make a nice home for someone. We would hate to see it end up in the landfill but that's where it will end up if we can't find a new home for it.(no pun intended) it's yours for the taking, if you're interested, let us know. Best way to reach me is bill@gotchacoveredde.com

What a nice space. We also created 2 large cedar lined closets for added storage. Something we could all use.

We just finished this loft bedroom in Lewes, Delaware. In addition to creating a unique living space and adding over 400 square feet for the homeowners, we took advantage of our energy auditing credentials and expertise to improve this home's energy efficiency in the process. We used open cell spray foam insulation and advanced air sealing techniques to achieve a 26% improvement in energy efficiency. Additionally, our auditing credentials qualified the homeowner for approximately $3,000.00 in rebates.
Now that's a "win win" situation.

well, the new year is upon us and in Lewes, Delaware so is our first major nor'easter. The wind is howling and before it's over we expect a foot or more of snow. I remember when we didn't get this much in a year.
If you are sitting down on a cold winter night, watching TV and you don't know where that draft is coming from. Look up. If you have recessed lighting, it's probably coming from there.
A simple fix to eliminate a lot of that draft is a bead of caulk applied between the fixture and edge of the drywall. You will be surprised how much air gets in around those lights.
